The Challenge: Double Agents

Double Agents is the 36th season of The Challenge. This season follows various reality stars competing in a espionage-themed pairs game for a share of a million dollars. The season was filmed in Reykjavík, Iceland from late August to October 2020.

A pre-season special, The Challenge: Double Agents Declassified, aired on Monday, December 7.

Description[]

After the chaos of Total Madness, The Challenge: Double Agents returns the series to a partners game, but the contestants still can't trust anyone on this spy thriller-inspired showdown.

Format[]

Each team will compete in various challenges followed by elimination rounds known as "The Crater" which are played by gender. The winners, known as the "Double Agents", will be safe from elimination. The rest of the house will secretly vote in one team into the Crater in the voting Chamber. The Double Agents will be able to see who gets voted in, and who voted for them. In the Crater, the winners will then choose their opponents or volunteer for the elimination themselves. The elimination will be played as individuals, and the gender that will be playing will be announced after both teams are selected. The winner will earn a Gold Skull which qualifies them for the Final. They will also have the choice to either remain with their partner, choose a Rogue Agent (those left without a partner), or choose another's player's teammate.

In the Final Mission, four teams will compete. The prize money splits as follows:

Winners: $900,000 ($450,000 each)
Runners-up: $100,000 ($50,000 each)
Third and fourth: $0

Twists[]

Team Selection: The Opening Challenge will have players compete as individuals. The overall winner had first pick on their partner. The other players were left to freely choose a partner of the opposite sex.
Skulls: Returning from Total Madness, players who win an elimination will earn a Skull which is the sole qualifier for the Final Challenge. This season, there are only 10 skulls available. After all of the skulls for each gender are acquired, players without a skull are forced to steal Skulls from the current holders.
Rogue Agents: Players who are left without a partner are known as Rogue Agents. Rogue Agents will not be able to compete in the challenge, but they will be able to vote.
Infiltration: Similar to the Turncoat twist from War of the Worlds 2, the winner of the elimination will have the choice to remain with their partner, pair up with the Rogue Agent, or steal another partner.
Security Breach: Throughout the season, various "security breaches" will be implemented into the game.
- Reactivated Agent: Due to three female players disqualifying, Ashley was reactivated to serve as a replacement.
- Double Elimination: Due to a disqualification that led to two Rouge Agents in the Crater, a double elimination took place in Episode 12.

↑ The "Decryption" challenge was played as individuals. Aneesa was the overall winner and had first picks on her partner. The rest of the house chose their pairs, and the rest of the game was played in pairs. Since both Aneesa & Fessy won the challenge, they were both safe from the Crater.
↑ Nicole was medically disqualified from the competition after dislocating her shoulder during the "Road Kill" challenge. Devin was still eligible for the Crater, and because he was voted in, the Crater was declared as a male elimination.
↑ Liv hurt her arm during the "Road Kill" challenge. Her status in the game was left until prior to the "Drone Control" challenge where it was revealed that Liv was medically disqualified. Mechie was a Rogue Agent as a result.
↑ Natalie was medically disqualified from the game prior to the "Agent Down" challenge due to unknown reasons. In the show, Natalie stated she left due to personal reasons. However, in an interview with US Weekly, Natalie revealed that she learned she was pregnant which led to her leaving. Ashley was brought back as her replacement.
↑ Lio withdrew from the game prior to the "Smuggle Run" challenge to better his mental health and be home with his family. Gabby was paired up with Devin as a result.
↑ Lolo withdrew from the competition prior to the "Dead Ringer" elimination after growing frustrated with her performance and her diminishing chances at getting a Gold Skull. Because of her leaving, the Crater had two Rogue Agents. The "Dead Ringer" elimination was declared a double male elimination. The two teams with the most votes were thrown into the Crater, and the Double Agents decides both match-ups.
↑ Nam was medically disqualified prior to the "Survive the Night" challenge due to injuring his back. Big T was a Rogue Agent as a result.
↑ Kyle was medically disqualified from the "Hall Brawl" elimination after breaking his finger during his first round against Fessy. Fessy was declared the winner by default.
↑ As a punishment for not trying during the "Aerial Takedown" challenge, the votes of CT, Darrell, Devin, Fessy, Josh, Kyle, Mechie, and Nam were void.

Reunion[]

The two-part reunion was filmed in New York City, New York, and was hosted by NFL champion Vernon Davis. The contestants who attended the reunion were: Amber B., Amber M., Aneesa, Ashley, Cory, CT, Devin, Fessy, Jay, Josh, Kam, Kaycee, Leroy, Nany, and Tori. Big T, Darrell, Gabby, Kyle, Nam, and Nelson attended the reunion via satellite.

COVID-19 Precautions[]

This season was filmed amid the coronavirus pandemic, and precautions took place in order to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. Before the cast departed, 38 potential cast members (including Analyse Talavera, Asaf Goren, Derrick Henry, and Jenny West) were quarantined in their respective countries where they were tested regularly. Among these cast members, six were dropped before departure, and two were on location as alternates in case anyone was to be disqualified.

The cast and crew were tested regularly on location every three days. According to Variety, members of the crew had to stay six feet apart from the cast, including camera operators. This season used new lenses, so that they were able to get closeup shots, and the cast had to put on their own microphones.

Unlike most seasons, where the cast was seen going out to bars between challenges, the cast was forced to stay within their living quarters. As a result, production added a in-house club where the cast can party in between challenges.

Trivia[]

Jenny West and Mark Jansen (Big Brother 19) were flown to Iceland with the initial cast to serve as alternates in case anybody was disqualified. They were eventually sent home after being unused.
Double Agents holds the record for the most disqualifications in a single season with seven.

The Challenge Series

[1] The "Decryption" challenge was played as individuals. Aneesa was the overall winner and had first picks on her partner. The rest of the house chose their pairs, and the rest of the game was played in pairs. Since both Aneesa & Fessy won the challenge, they were both safe from the Crater.

[2] Nicole was medically disqualified from the competition after dislocating her shoulder during the "Road Kill" challenge. Devin was still eligible for the Crater, and because he was voted in, the Crater was declared as a male elimination.

[3] Liv hurt her arm during the "Road Kill" challenge. Her status in the game was left until prior to the "Drone Control" challenge where it was revealed that Liv was medically disqualified. Mechie was a Rogue Agent as a result.

[4] Natalie was medically disqualified from the game prior to the "Agent Down" challenge due to unknown reasons. In the show, Natalie stated she left due to personal reasons. However, in an interview with US Weekly, Natalie revealed that she learned she was pregnant which led to her leaving. Ashley was brought back as her replacement.

[5] Lio withdrew from the game prior to the "Smuggle Run" challenge to better his mental health and be home with his family. Gabby was paired up with Devin as a result.

[6] Lolo withdrew from the competition prior to the "Dead Ringer" elimination after growing frustrated with her performance and her diminishing chances at getting a Gold Skull. Because of her leaving, the Crater had two Rogue Agents. The "Dead Ringer" elimination was declared a double male elimination. The two teams with the most votes were thrown into the Crater, and the Double Agents decides both match-ups.

[7] Nam was medically disqualified prior to the "Survive the Night" challenge due to injuring his back. Big T was a Rogue Agent as a result.

[8] Kyle was medically disqualified from the "Hall Brawl" elimination after breaking his finger during his first round against Fessy. Fessy was declared the winner by default.

[9] As a punishment for not trying during the "Aerial Takedown" challenge, the votes of CT, Darrell, Devin, Fessy, Josh, Kyle, Mechie, and Nam were void.
